SIAM welcomes new members from MGAM contest

SIAM initiated the Member Get a Member program to encourage members to invite their colleagues to join SIAM. Last year, 75 members referred 85 colleagues who joined SIAM. For every member who referred a colleague who subsequently joined SIAM, both the referring and new members were entered into a drawing to win prizes. We are pleased to welcome all new members, and to announce the prize recipients, who won one of four prizes: an iPad, a free year of SIAM membership, a SIAM conference registration or a SIAM book of their choice. You can find more details on winners here:

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Make the Most of Your Membership!

Are you using your SIAM membership to the fullest? There are so many benefits to a SIAM membership, that it may be hard to keep track! That’s why we have attempted to bring all of the information together on the “Make the Most of your Membership” page.

In addition, you may view a flyer that can help you better Navigate a SIAM Conference. Put together by the SIAM membership committee, it was especially designed to help students and first-time attendees make the most of SIAM conferences.

Call for Nominations for ICIAM Prizes

The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) awards five prestigious prizes every four years. The ICIAM Prize Committee for 2015 is calling for nominations for prizes to be awarded at the 8th International Congress to be held in Beijing, China in August 2015. All ICIAM prizes are international, and each prize has its own special character. Nominations are welcomed from all over the world, and are due October 31, 2013.

Sustainability is theme for 2013 Math Awareness Month

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics in order to recognize the importance of mathematics. Written materials and an accompanying poster highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area. The theme for Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2013, is “Mathematics of Sustainability,” which was chosen to coordinate with the Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 initiative.  The Math Awareness Month effort will spotlight the role of mathematics in helping us balance human needs against the world’s resources while operating within the constraints of nature, while seeking creative solutions for a sustainable way of life. SIAM student chapters are encouraged to recognize Math Awareness Month on campus and in their communities.

Visit the Mathematics Awareness Month website to download the poster, read theme essays, view links to related resources, and obtain a sample press release that may be adapted by mathematics departments to help publicize activities:

Supplementary Materials for SIAM journals

SIAM journals have entered a new era and are now considering unrefereed supplementary materials for publication along with the author’s manuscript. The first journals to seize the opportunity, SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and SIAM Review, began taking submissions with accompanying supplemental files in January.  SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis is next in line, with other journals expected to follow. Prior to this new initiative, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems and SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences did review refereed supplemental content. SIAM journals that consider supplemental content for publication under the new policy will treat it on an unrefereed basis. Supplementary materials—which may include additional figures or examples, animations, data sets, computer code, or other materials necessary to fully document the research contained in the paper or to facilitate the readers’ ability to understand and extend the work— must be included at the time the article is first submitted, and will be linked from the main article webpage.
