How to Prepare an Effective Nomination

Each year, SIAM’s prize program recognizes applied mathematicians and computational scientists who render significant research contributions and valuable service to the community. The range and number of nomination submissions are as crucial as the selection process in helping us honor the most deserving members. In order to help members prepare an effective nomination, SIAM’s Major Awards Committee, chaired by Nick Higham, has prepared a document outlining recommendations for those submitting nominations for SIAM prizes. Among the recommendations is the suggestion that a few support letters with quality information about the nominee are preferable to a large number of emails simply stating support. There is plenty of other great advice.

Welcoming new EASIAM officers

The East Asia Section of SIAM (EASIAM) is happy to announce its newly-elected officers:

Student travel funds for upcoming SIAM conferences

If you are a student traveling to the ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA13), Analytic Algorithmics and Combinatorics (ANALCO13) or Algorithm Engineering and Experiments (ALENEX13), you may be eligible for travel funds, thanks to grants from IBM Research and Microsoft Corporation. Preference will be given to applicants presenting papers at workshops and minisymposia as well as to co-authors of papers. Students may apply for travel support in the amount of $650 plus free registration. The deadline for applications is December 10, 2012.

Registration open for Moody’s Mega Math Challenge

It’s that time of year again: when high school students from all over the Eastern United States gather their teams and get ready to take on an issue facing the real world—with the power of math. Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, an applied math contest organized by SIAM in partnership with The Moody’s Foundation, which funds the contest, will take place March 2 and 3, 2013. A total of $115,000 in scholarships is up for grabs for the top teams. The Internet-based contest allows students the opportunity to address real world issues with math modeling, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. The goal of the Challenge is to motivate high school students toward further education and careers in the mathematical sciences. More information about the Challenge is available at the link below:

Call for proposals: 2014 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School

SIAM is calling for letters of intent for possible proposals of topics and organizers for the Gene Golub SIAM Summer School (G2S3) in 2014. The courses in the proposed two-week school for approximately 45 graduate students are expected to be at the research level, have some computational flavor, and cover topics not usually found in regular university courses, in addition to having an overall theme of current interest including lectures and exercises/project sessions. The deadline for letters of intent is January 31, 2013. The school will be held in the period between June-August 2014 ensuring that there is no conflict with SIAM Annual Meeting travel. Linear and Nonlinear Inverse Problems with Practical Applications

Inverse problems arise in practical applications whenever there is a need to interpret indirect measurements. This book explains how to identify ill-posed inverse problems arising in practice and how to design computational solution methods for them; explains computational approaches in a hands-on fashion, with related codes available on a website; and serves as a convenient entry point to practical inversion. Eigenvalues of Matrices, Revised Edition
