Re-introducing SIAM Connect

Is SIAM Connect among your regular sources of online information? You, as a SIAM member, will likely have interest in its relevant content.

SIAM Connect is SIAM’s online news page. Nuggets present overviews of exciting new research from SIAM journals in a citizen math perspective, with focus on applications to significant real-world questions. SIAM Presents brings audio-visual content from SIAM conferences including complete slide presentations (with synchronized audio) of minisymposia and lectures, and overview video clips featuring some of the interesting speakers from past meetings. SIAM News announcements give details on relevant conferences, workshops and awards; the Policy and Funding section updates you about applied mathematics education and research; conference roundups recap SIAM meetings; and Student News apprises students of new and exciting opportunities. SIAM Elections are open!

Members are now welcome to elect representatives to serve on the SIAM Board of Trustees and SIAM Council. The individuals elected will govern SIAM’s activities and make important decisions for the organization on your behalf. It is worth taking a few minutes to read the candidate statements, and vote for the people you would like most to represent you. Candidate information is available at:

On September 1, all dues-paying members should have received an e-mail message from the “SIAM Election Coordinator” (SIAM@votenet.com) with unique voting credentials and a link to the voting site. Nominate a SIAM member to the 2013 Class of Fellows

Nominations to the 2013 Class of SIAM Fellows are being accepted through November 5, 2012. You can help raise visibility of the applied math community by helping SIAM identify members who have demonstrated excellence in research, industrial work, educational activities and other service related to the goals of SIAM. Fellows will be announced in March and will be recognized at the 2013 SIAM Annual Meeting to be held in July.

Members can nominate up to two individuals for distinguished work in the applied mathematical and computational sciences. Make a nomination at http://nominatefellows.siam.org.

Many ways to a SIAM membership

There are many ways to be (or continue to be) a SIAM member. Simply look for your renewal notice e-mail in mid-September. The email will allow you to link directly to your SIAM membership account and either pay your dues online or print out a renewal invoice to mail or fax your payment. Please be sure to whitelist “renewals@siam.org” to ensure you receive all correspondence. You can reach the same renewal information by logging in at my.siam.org, and clicking on “My Renewal”. Free student members, don’t forget that you will need to renew your membership to continue receiving all member benefits in 2013. Nonstudent members can nominate up to two students per year for free student membership.

Members can also refer their colleagues through the SIAM Member-Get-a-Member program. If the referred individual joins SIAM as a nonstudent member, both the referring and new members are entered into a contest to win a free SIAM membership, SIAM book, or SIAM conference registration of their choice. In addition, the first 100 members to refer someone who joins SIAM will receive a SIAM t-shirt. For questions about renewing, or if you want to change your membership type or term, contact membership@siam.org.

Congratulations to SIAM’s 2012 prize recipients

SIAM’s prestigious prize program recognizes significant contributions in the fields of applied mathematical and computational sciences each year. The aim of the program is to raise visibility of applied mathematics in the broader community, in addition to encouraging and honoring quality research—and those who deliver it. At this year’s SIAM Annual Meeting held in Minneapolis in July, the 2012 prize recipients received their awards from SIAM President Nick Trefethen at the Prizes and Awards Luncheon.

Say hello to the SIAM Student Blog

With student chapters representing 100 universities in over a dozen countries worldwide, SIAM has an active and vibrant student community. In keeping with the goals of SIAM, SIAM chapters are involved in various activities to raise visibility for applied mathematics and computational science. From outreach events at local schools, professional development activities and career fairs, special lectures, workshops and conferences, to Pi Day events and math movie nights, SIAM chapters have come up with creative ways to celebrate and promote math through the years. Now they have one more outlet for their creative endeavors. SIAM has a brand new Student Blog where students can share and seek ideas on fundraising and public outreach, in addition to discussing general views and perspectives on math education and research.

The debut post presents guidelines for running student conferences, meticulously put together by representatives from five SIAM chapters. You can read the blog here:

AN12 and FM12 on SIAM Presents

Presentations of selected sessions from the SIAM Annual Meeting and the Conference on Financial Mathematics and Engineering, held jointly in July, are now available on SIAM Presents. View and listen to interesting talks in a wide range of areas— from modeling of ocean dynamics, image processing, the math behind movie special effects, analysis of systemic risk, and stochastic control in finance to issues in mathematical publishing today.

In addition to the invited and prize lectures and select minisymposia, the tutorial on “Mathematical Modeling of Interest Rates: Challenges and New Directions” is also available.

Funding available for student chapters

SIAM is accepting requests for funds from SIAM Student Chapters worldwide for up to $500 per chapter. Approved chapters may apply for funding for projects to take place on their campuses during the 2012-2013 academic year. Please include a description of the proposed project with the projected budget, breakdown of activities, and any other sources of funding available. “Request for Funding” forms may be downloaded at the link below:

Combating plagiarism

In March 2010, SIAM—taking action on a noticeable increase in author misconduct at a time where web access made copying previously published material all too easy—began to run journal submissions through software provided by CrossCheck, an initiative to combat scholarly and professional plagiarism. Close to two and a half years later, SIAM has reached a milestone, running the ten-thousandth submission against CrossCheck’s database of more than 72,000 books, journals and conference proceedings encompassing 32 million individual items. When a submission is run through the software, a report is created reflecting duplicated content. This is then reviewed by SIAM staff, and if the duplication sounds an alarm, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief is notified. It’s good to take a step back and note that there have been few cases of blatant plagiarism, where 50, 70, or 90 percent of a submission is lifted verbatim from other work. Seen more often are problems involving a degree of self-plagiarism or insufficient citation. The overall percentage of “flagged” submissions runs under 4 percent.

Along with 10,000-plus submissions, SIAM has also re-checked close to 2,500 accepted papers. The new report uncovers concerns stemming from material published elsewhere in the time elapsed between submission and acceptance. This double-check returns few problems—less than 1 percent of papers at acceptance show duplication of content—but publishing even one paper with plagiarized material is too many.

Travel grants for Mathematical Congress of the Americas

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has received funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide partial travel support for up to sixty U.S. mathematicians attending the inaugural meeting of the Mathematical Congress of the Americas (MCA) to be held August 5-9, 2013 in Guanajuato, Mexico. The program is open to U.S. mathematicians (who must be affiliated with a U.S. institution at the time of travel). It is expected that the program will provide travel support for both U.S.-based invited speakers (senior mathematicians) and early career mathematicians. Applications will be accepted from September 15 – October 31, 2012.
