SIAM Unwrapped 2012 Annual Meeting Wrap-up

Dear SIAM members,

The 2012 SIAM Annual meeting, held jointly with the SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics in Minneapolis, Minnesota earlier this month, was a huge success. With more than 1,100 attendees representing industrial, academic and government sectors from over 35 countries worldwide, the meeting inspired discussion on fundamental topics and cutting-edge research alike.

We thank all delegates for their participation, be it as attendees, presenters, or panelists. We would also like to extend thanks to the exhibitors for enhancing the attendee experience, and to IBM for their contribution as a sponsor.

AN12 in text, pictures and tweets

Daily roundups from the Annual Meeting, recapping some of the invited lectures, prize presentations, and special events are available on SIAM Connect. Pictures from the Student Orientation, Prizes and Awards Luncheon, Poster session, and Community Reception, among other events have been posted. In addition, Twitter provides an unvarnished account of discussions inspired at the meeting. View our Twitter archive to read feedback from attendees as they were delivered in real time, including insights on lectures and sessions, general thoughts on the conference, and interesting trivia about Minneapolis. In a few weeks, slides with synchronized audio for many of the invited presentations and minisymposia will be posted on SIAM Presents, as will video clips recapping some of the exciting research presented at AN12, many of which reinforce the real-world uses of math and promise to be of broad interest.

SIAM: New developments and growth

With conferences and publications that spotlight cutting-edge research, prizes and awards that recognize outstanding work, professional development events to help students and those in their early careers, and a variety of outreach activities to raise the public’s awareness of the value of applied math and computational science, SIAM has exciting developments to report every year. SIAM President Nick Trefethen recapped all of this in his Annual Report to members at the Business Meeting held in Minneapolis.

Outstanding contributions honored with SIAM Prizes

SIAM’s prize program recognizes applied mathematicians and computational scientists each year to raise visibility of exciting work in the field. This year’s prize recipients were recognized and awarded prizes at the Prizes and Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, July 10. SIAM President Nick Trefethen awarded the following prizes:

AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture Prize: Barbara Lee Keyfitz, The Ohio State University, USA

I.E. Block Community Lecture: Robert Bridson, The University of British Columbia, Canada

John von Neumann Lecture: John Ball, University of Oxford, United Kingdom

W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize Lecture: Ruth F. Curtain, University of Groningen, The Netherlands

In addition, student winners of the SIAM Student Paper Prize and the SIAM Award in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) were awarded. In conclusion, Dr. Trefethan urged SIAM members to continue to submit nominations, particularly emphasizing the need to increase visibility of industrial contributions in the community.

2012 SIAM Fellows recognized. Nominate for 2013!

SIAM designates Fellows of the Society each year to honor distinguished contributions to the discipline, in order to support the advancement of SIAM members, and to help make them more competitive for awards and honors in the broader society. New student activities at Student Days

The annual meeting delivered a host of new student activities this year for the over 300 student attendees. Organized by Conference Co-chairs Michele Benzi and Tasso Kaper with help from SIAM staff and the education and program committees, the events were well received by students and the membership committee. In particular, a student orientation and an informal meeting with invited speakers generated a great deal of interest and participation. Impromptu social events by the University of Minnesota SIAM chapter were borne out of these events, and have inspired anticipation of similar such events—fueled in part by mobile technology—at upcoming SIAM meetings.

Two sessions on undergraduate research in applied and computational mathematics gave undergraduates a chance to present their research and receive feedback from the audience. In addition, the Career Fair and Graduate Student Reception held Monday as well as the Professional Development Evening on Thursday gave opportunities for students and early-career attendees to meet with representatives from leading organizations in the field, and get valuable insights on further education and career development. And as usual, the poster session boasting over 100 posters in wide-ranging areas of applied math and computational science, provided a perfect setting for students and early-career scientists to explain their research, inspire discussion, and network and interact with peers and professionals.

Cyber-SIAM updates from AN12

An idea for a SIAM student chapter blog, which would function as an idea lab for chapter activities and fundraising, was proposed at the Student Chapters’ breakfast meeting. SIAM will work with interested chapters to initiate this in the coming months. If interested in contributing, or if you have ideas and suggestions, please e-mail pao@siam.org. Several ideas for SIAM to proceed on the social media front also came out of a “tweet-up” held at the Annual Meeting, including suggestions for individual blogs for mathematicians, SIAGs, Fellows, and ways to increase discussion and feedback for SIAM journal articles.

Three Twitter book giveaways were organized to coincide with invited lectures of SIAM book authors. The audience was encouraged to tweet during plenary talks by Tony Chan (Image Processing and Computational Mathematics), Micheal Heroux (What SIAM Members Should Know About Emerging Architectures) and Yousef Saad (Linear Algebra Methods for Data Mining with Applications to Materials Science). Three lucky winners were recipients of SIAM books by these exemplary authors.
