SIAM Unwrapped – June 2011

SIAM Unwrapped is a free electronic newsletter distributed monthly to SIAM members. It provides links to industry news, membership information, meetings, publications, and other items of interest.

Dear SIAM members,

As we wet our feet in the realm of social media, we are beginning to use our Twitter and Facebook pages, in addition to traditional methods of communication, such as regular and electronic mail to communicate with our community.

Social media offers the sort of instant two-way communication that not only allows us to convey timely information to our members, but also allows you to contact us with any questions or concerns that require immediate feedback.

Check out our Twitter and Facebook pages for updates on SIAM events, prizes, raffles, and news from the larger applied math community.

Regards,

Karthika Muthukumaraswamy

SIAM annual business meeting

In lieu of a SIAM Annual Meeting in 2011, the annual business meeting of SIAM members will occur during ICIAM 2011, which is to be held July 18-22 in Vancouver, Canada. The annual business meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 19, at 7:30 a.m. in Room 109 of the Vancouver Convention Centre. Participation is open to all SIAM members. The meeting will be chaired by SIAM President Nick Trefethen and will include a review of SIAM activities, finances, and plans for the future. Refreshments will be served. Details on the meeting’s content and discussion will be posted on the SIAM site after the meeting.

Nominate a SIAM Fellow

SIAM is getting ready to elect its next Class of Fellows. If you know of a colleague deserving of the distinction to join this exceptional group of researchers, please send us your suggestions! We are now inviting nominations for the 2012 Class; selections will be made in the fall of 2011. The SIAM Fellows Program encourages nominations from diverse backgrounds spanning the industrial, private, and public sectors. Members are especially urged to nominate deserving individuals from minority and underrepresented groups. Please refer to the Fellows page for criteria and guidelines:

SIAM’s new membership management platform

SIAM is moving to a new and improved membership management system. The new platform, with an anticipated launch date of early July, will provide all the features included in the current customer support portal, including capabilities to join and renew memberships, manage subscriptions, and register for conferences. Over the next several months, we will be adding additional capabilities to the system, such as management of your online account information and notification settings, better access to your SIAM-related activities, including SIAG-related events and communications, and some aspects of social networking. This change should have minimal impact on our members and end users, except for a new interface and improved functionality. The transition dates, once known, will be posted on the current website.

SIAM Travel Awards for PP12

Applications are now being accepted for SIAM Travel Awards to the SIAM Conference on Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing (PP12) to be held February 15-17, 2012 in Savannah, Georgia. The application deadline is AUGUST 1, 2011. The online application system for travel awards will close after this date. Students and postdoctoral applicants, please be advised that the travel award applications must be sent in by August 1, two weeks PRIOR to the deadline for submission of abstracts.  If you have a student speaker in mind for your minisymposium or if you are advising a student on a contributed presentation, be sure to alert them to this deadline.

Find the SIAM Travel Award application site at http://awards.siam.org.

Irena Lasiecka to receive Reid Prize at CT11

The W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize will be awarded to Irena Lasiecka during the SIAM Conference on Control and Its Applications (CT11) to be held July 25-27, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Dr. Lasiecka is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She will receive the Reid Prize medal and deliver the Reid Prize lecture, “Analysis and Control of Coupled PDE Systems Arising in Fluid-Structure and Gas Flow-Structure Interaction,” at a plenary session from 9:00—9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, in Constellation E/F at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore.  An abstract of her lecture can be found at http://meetings.siam.org/sess/dsp_programsess.cfm?SESSIONCODE=13701

New SIAM Books

Spectral Approximation of Linear Operators

Françoise Chatelin – Université de Toulouse, CERFACS

This classic textbook provides a unified treatment of spectral approximation for closed or bounded operators as well as for matrices. Despite significant changes and advances in the field since it was first published in 1983, the book continues to form the theoretical bedrock for any computational approach to spectral theory over matrices or linear operators. This coverage of classical results is not readily available elsewhere. Spectral Approximation of Linear Operators offers in-depth analysis of the properties of various types of operator convergence, the spectral approximation of non–self-adjoint operators, a generalization of classical perturbation theory, and computable errors bounds and iterative refinement techniques, along with many exercises (with solutions), making it a valuable textbook for graduate students and reference manual for self-study.

Numerical Methods for Large Eigenvalue Problems, Revised Edition

Yousef Saad – University of Minnesota

This revised edition discusses numerical methods for computing eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large sparse matrices. It provides an in-depth view of the numerical methods that are applicable for solving matrix eigenvalue problems that arise in various engineering and scientific applications. Each chapter in this revised edition was updated by shortening or deleting outdated topics, adding topics of more recent interest, and adapting the Notes and References section accordingly.

Multigrid Techniques: 1984 Guide with Applications to Fluid Dynamics, Revised Edition

Achi Brandt – The Weizmann Institute of Science and University of California at Los Angeles

Oren Livne – University of Utah

Starting from simple examples, this book guides the reader through practical stages for developing reliable multigrid solvers, methodically supported by accurate performance predictors. The revised edition presents discretization and fast solution of linear and nonlinear partial differential systems; treatment of boundary conditions, global constraints and singularities; grid adaptation, high-order approximations, and system design optimization; applications to fluid dynamics, from simple models to advanced systems; new quantitative performance predictors, a MATLAB® sample code, and more.
